Cary Morin – singer, songwriter, and musician.
How long have you been in operation? And what services/products do you provide?
I have been in operation as a musician for over 40 years. I started my LLC in 2018.
What has been the driving force behind your business? And in what ways are you hoping to grow in the future?
I am driven by my desire to create and perform music, which has been my passion since I was about 6 years old. My father kept a guitar around the house and often had sing-along parties when I was small. My mother traded a neighbor piano lessons for me in exchange for doing her laundry. While I was surrounded by music growing up, I am the only professional musician in my family.
Another major driver has been that music creates community. I love bringing the joy of music to people. Most everyone I have met in my adult life has been through music.
As an entrepreneur what is one challenge you’ve faced in the past? And how did you overcome it?
We all faced a lack of work due to the pandemic. I think a lack of financial resources is always a fear as an entrepreneur. During the pandemic, I had to re-examine my business and acknowledge what wasn’t working. I had to focus more on what I could do, once I acknowledged what I couldn’t do, scale back my operation, and learn to live with less. I am still in the process of rethinking and rebuilding.
How was your overall experience working with Energize Colorado? What solution did Energize Colorado provide? And how did/will the solution benefit you and your business?
Working with Energize Colorado was fairly simple and very respectful. Energize Colorado’s low-cost loan funding afforded me the opportunity to build an aspect of my business that I was unable to do in the past while recovering from a serious downturn in my industry.
I have been able to promote the production and recording side of my business since receiving these load funds. I am also able to focus on recording and licensing my music for TV, advertising, and film.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone with aspirations to start a business of their own?
On the financial side, make sure to build a reserve fund for emergencies and pandemics! No matter how small your budget is, always stash money away for the unexpected.
